5/25/036th Annual Mountain's of MiseryA hardy group of TriPower riders ventured West to tackle the 6th Annual Mountain's of Misery. They were greeted with perfect weather and a beautiful day to ride the Shenandoah Valley. What could be a more satisfying way to end the day than with a five mile, category one climb up to Mountain Lake? Each one of them left a little of themselves on the mountain that day, Wayno left a little more, including some Luna bar, banana, cliff shot, and a little Gatorade. Gene declared the last two miles of Bridge to Bridge tougher than the 5 to the top of Mountain Lake (I think that is what he said. Dude, zip up the jersey for the photo next time). It was a great ride and one not to be missed next year! Hope to see more TP riders at B2B.
4/17/03Racing season has started and TriPower is getting some results in the early season training series. We took the top three slots in yesterday's A race put on by Fat Frogs. Way to go GeneR, English Tim and John. GenerR says he'll buy everyone a Slurpee. Stay tuned for updates 4/5/03The uniforms are in and we're looking good. Check out the 2003 Tripower photo in the photos section. 12/16/02It is that time of year again, when you order some new uniforms and make that first big commitment to next season. Don't be the only one not to get a new addition to your racing kit. Afraid those few extra pounds you put on over Thanksgiving won't look good in a new skin suit, just as Robert Sawyer (no need to ask, he'll tell you). A big thanks to Gene for organizing this years uniform order. The best way to help him out is to get your order in early. The link to the uniform order form is below. Please print it out and mail it to Gene with your deposit. You will need to change the page set up landscape after you open the form so it will print correctly. Thanks.
Congratulations to the Club for another fantastic event in downtown Norfolk! I must say, I had a great time on Sunday being a part of such great event. Of the 9 or so places I've lived, Tidewater is the only place that feels like home because of my association with TriPower and the local cycling community. Enjoy the article from the Virginia Pilot. July 15, 2002Mother Nature puts slick spin on Cycling ClassicBy DANIELLE ROACH, The Virginian-PilotThe terrain of downtown Norfolk's Ford Cycling Classic hardly compares with the majestic mountains and picturesque scenery of Le Tour de France, but the local race's competitors proved to be just as tough. With rain pelting their backs and a slippery road beneath them, hundreds of cyclists competed on Sunday in eight categories, from novices to professionals. Experience seemed to matter little as they carefully maneuvered the slick course that included a full 180-degree turn and a short span of cobblestones. In a summer plagued by drought, Mother Nature more than made up for it on Sunday and though cyclists are known for competing in the harshest conditions, they took precautions. "The rain definitely adds an element of risk simply because the roads are slick, and full of oil, especially here in the downtown area," said Glen Eyler, who manages the North End cycling shop in Virginia Beach and competed in the Masters 40 division. "It's tricky because you have to be a good technical rider, and sometimes you have to sacrifice speed for safety." Some riders found that out the hard way on the 180-degree turn in front of Nauticus as dozens found themselves skidding out of control, including National Team member Mark Fitzgerald. "I hit the indentations and some reflectors in the road and before I knew it, I was on the ground," he said. "In these conditions, it's almost inevitable to slide out when you hit the brakes and it takes a certain level of skill to overcome that. That's what makes it so much of a challenge." The cyclists weren't the only ones struggling with the elements. Though the rain had tapered off for the Inline Speed Skating Competition, moisture and plenty of puddles made for an interesting course as the skaters made their way down the loop on Waterside Drive. "I fell down twice, once in the first lap," said Taylor Keys, who took first in the Boys Junior Speed Skating division. "I realized on that first turn that I wouldn't be able to cross the corners and I'd have to start slowing down pretty early if I wanted to make it to the finish line." The race was the culmination of a weekend of cycling, including Friday night's Twilight Street Sprint in Portsmouth and the Noel Wick Grand Prix Criterium held at Fort Story on Saturday. Even as the rain began to pour with only two laps left in Sunday's Teeuwen Pro 1,2 competition, fans simply clamored together under any available shelter as the cyclists whizzed by wiping moisture from their eyes. Eddie Rabbit's "I Love a Rainy Night" blared in the background, the cheers rose to a roar, and the races continued. The downpour was enough to dampen the roads, but clearly not enough to dampen their spirits, particularly that of Zack Zimmerman who claimed the $4,000 purse by winning the Teeuwen Pro 1,2 Division. "Once the rain started to really come down, it was a mental game for me," said the 22-year-old Richmond native. "I knew I'd have to be patient on the corners and just make it to the end without wiping out." 07/05/02Jeff Lawson's latest report from EuropeOne picture says a thousand words: 06/14/02Jeff's ride to raise money for cancer researchReport from Jeff's ride to raise money for cancer research (with a little help from his friends :) I thought everyone might enjoy an accounting of the cross state bike ride that we did today for The Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society. First of all I want to extend my deepest thanks to Jim "the hammer king" Dunham, John "force the pace" Flora, Vince "king of the draft" Heivilin, Bill "I can go as hard as I can and kill them because I'm only going halfway" Conoscenti, Gene "what do you mean this isn't a race" Rutledge, Bryan "I want to make you guys feel the pain I felt in the Race Across America" Ralston , and Steven "gotta keep up with this serious testosterone" Masters. Without them I could have had a nice leisurely ride. :-) Seriously, it was one of the all-time hammerfests (in my opinion) and I am indebted to them for putting a hurting on me and providing support. We started at Knotts Island at 7 am and did a reverse Coghill ride followed by a reverse last half of the Starbucks ride. That 36+ miles put us at the tunnel where we took the van across the pond for the last 70 miles of the trip. It was hot and humid from the start with a tailwind which apparently made the boys feel like Lance and crew. The pace from the start was brutal with a cruising speed of about 26-28 mph to the tunnel, not counting the various stop lights etc we had to slow down for. Everyone said that we wouldn't hold that pace and they were right. THE NEXT 2 HOURS WAS EVEN FASTER ! We went between 27 and 30 for the next 60 miles. The last 20 miles were not quite as fast because of numerous lights/flats/ and fatigue but we still rode nearly 110 miles in almost exactly 4 1/2 hours. All in all I have to say that I was thoroughly spent but pleased and was happy to raise money for a good cause with a good bunch of friends helping me. So thanks again! editor's note: You should see him race! GO Jeff "show me the money" Lawson. 05/05/02Training Camp: The Good, the Bad and the UglyFinally some new news! Unfortunately not all good: For those that missed the "training camp" read on: First the good news: The accommodations were plush and the views magnificent. Those in attendance were Blair and Mimi Fackler, Jim, Jeff and me. Friday we went on a reconnaissance mission which included a climb up Crabtree falls and a new climb called Vesuvius. On the map it looked like an 80 mile loop, but turned out to be an epic 102. I think we left at 1030 and got back around 6. Fortunately, Blair and Mimi had the kitchen well under control and as we crawled into the condo we were greeted with the sweet aroma of Marinara sauce, Italian bread, Caesar salad, and red wine. It was good to be home. Now the bad news: Saturday was to be a little less ambitious (and about half the distance) but in the opposite direction. It was a bit cooler, ~45, so Blair and Mimi opted for a hike. Jeff, Jim and I were determined not to miss a day on the bikes so we suited up for a cold descent and headed out. At about 14 miles into the ride in the valley below we had settled into moderate pace. There was a bit of traffic so we were hugging the white line but rolling along around 25 mph. It was me, Jim and Jeff in that order. We were rolling past cow pastures and the occasional house when out of nowhere I saw a Rottweiler streak towards us from a driveway on our right. I had time to yell "DOG" and just got by him. Jim swerved left and for a second I didn't hear anything so I was relieved. Then, as I looked backwards I saw Jeff's new Trek sliding across the highway. It was making that sickening sound you never want to hear. Jeff was in a tuck and looked like he was rolling out of it. We turned around hoping he would pop back up. He didn't. About that same time some old country dude pulled up behind him in a van, jumped out and said "that dawg came out of nowhere and hit that boy". We had our witness... There was no blood, but Jeff's helmet was cracked and he knew immediately something was wrong with his right shoulder. Just before the crash we had stopped at a little store and asked a police officer about directions and the road we planned on riding. He was super nice and pointed us in the right direction. Well, it just so happened he wasn't far behind us down the road, saw all the commotion and pulled over to offer assistance. An ambulance and a volunteer EMT came to the scene to survey the damage. The police officer took statements and that's when we learned that the dog owner's story was going to be that we were on her property when the accident happened! The cop wasn't buying it. Neither was our country boy witness. Anyway, Jeff opted to go to the UVA ER 25 miles away rather than the local Nellysford country clinic. His x-rays are pretty impressive and show a clear separated shoulder. No fractures. Still, he'll be in a sling and out of commission for a few weeks...bummer. Knowing Jeff would not want us to end the ride short, we finished our loop in the sleet and rain... Sunday was one of those days when the skies are deep blue and the temps perfect for a ride. Jim and I did an out and back ending with a 9 mile climb from the valley below Wintergreen to the condo. Jeff got to hang out in the condo, watch Tour tapes, and eat left-overs. The next training camp is in the works for this fall. Keep you eye out for announcements... WELCOME NEW MEMBERS: Kay Lynn, Mitch, Frank, Blair, Rob, Perry and Reginal have recently joined our ranks. See you on the road guys! 2/14/02Susan Pollock, race director of the Ford Cycling Classic, is already hard at work preparing for next year's race. The third annual FCC has changed dates to July 14th this year so adjust your vacations accordingly. The team will need everyone's support to make this year's event even more successful than last year. The date change to earlier in the season will avoid conflicts with other Pro level races on the East coast and will translate into an even more exciting Pro field descending on Norfolk! 10/2/01RACE UPDATE : Tri-Power (aka the 'Yellow Guard') finished the season ranked 3rd out of ~87 teams in VA Best All Around (BAR) team competition! Tri-Power also won 5 BAR champion jerseys in the Cat V Men, Cat V Men Omnium, Cat 4 women, 35+ Women, and 35+ Women Omnium competitions. Way to go Wade (2), Susan and Sherrie(2)! |
