A Saturday Tradition
bikevoice:...it continues to amaze me: the Conte's ride has started every single Saturday--by my best judgment--since 1993. People have started this ride in treacherous conditions. They don't know why they are doing it. It is at the core of what it means to be alive, a contagion that says, "must ride today."
0715: Road ride from
Conte's on Laskin Rd. Fast paced 20 miles. Ride meets up with
the 8:30 ride again at Conte's.

Bill.
0830: Road ride from Conte's Bike Shop
on Laskin Road. 20 miles; fast pace with 3 re-groups. Coffee at Starbucks
afterwards. Many often do a reverse loop from New Moon back to Starbucks at about 10:30
finishing with 34 miles.
Contact: Bill.
55 miles total. While these two rides are fast there is usually a slower B-paced touring group that leaves after the main group led by Bill Woodhouse. Look to the home page for the occasional C-paced ride led by Liz.
Tuesday / Thursday Weekly Ride
7:15 am Tuesday & Thursday:
Ride leaves from The New Moon Café near
the Oceanfront at Holly and Pinewood Rds (1 block north of Laskin and
Holly) for a 15 mile warm up to Conte's on Laskin Road arriving in
time for the 8:00 ride. This ride is steady and fast (often very fast,
with average speeds during the season between 25-30). There is also a slower option with a max speed
of 24 mph at 7:00 AM on Thursdays from New Moon to Pungo returning to the Oceanfront at 9:00 with some
continuing down Atlantic to Great Neck for some extra miles to finish by 10:00.
Contact Mike
Hosang for information.
8:05 am Tuesday & Thursday:
Rides leave Conte's when the 7:15
ride arrives which is usually about 8:05. We do a modified Conte's
loop, taking Hilltop and Wolfsnare roads instead of the usual First
Colonial/Mill Dam route, to avoid Cape Henry Collegiate School
traffic. From Great Neck Road we do the usual loop down Shore Drive
and Atlantic Avenue before heading into Bay Colony at 49th street and
doing a big counterclockwise loop along Bayshore drive, ending at the
Blue Moon restaurant at Holly Rd and Pinewood Rd (1 block north of
Laskin Rd). The mileage of the ride to that point is
approximately 17 miles.
At this point some people ride the 3
miles back to the store, and the rest of us do a reverse loop
(another 17 miles) . The speed varies between A++ and B
pace depending on who shows up and what their training agenda is for
the day. Often the ride splits into 2 groups with a 26-30 mph
group and a 22-26 mph pack. There is one regroup about 5 mi into the
ride, and a sort of rolling regroup once we enter Bay Colony and the
pace slows. Occasionally, the reverse loop back from Blue Moon to
Conte's is used by team members for some interval training. Ride always
ends at Paneras at Hilltop (1 block from Conte's) for coffee/bagels
with free refills. The ride usually proceeds in all but the foulest
weather.
NOTE: The Thursday 8 am ride is obsolete when daylight allows the 7:00 am ride to Pungo.
Wednesdays
1800: Perfect winter training ride starts at Norfolk Conte's on 21st street. This is a standing ride from Sept through May. During the summer Liz may start another beginner's ride so check with her or back here for more information.

Winter Options
Conte's Spin Classes : check with them for availability. Bike Beat at Hiltop also has spin classes when it's cold. Currently they are Tue/Thur from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.
Performance Point : High tech and geared towards cycling.
CrossFit : Low tech, but there's a method to the madness and a stronger core has made me more comfortable on the bike and in the TT position. Fun...in a masochistic kind of way.
